The rise of the Geoweb

Session by Eduardo Manchon - SHIFT 2008

The usage of maps have not changed for decades, but the release of maps APIs has altered radically the scenario. The race to add more information to maps has started and hundreds of projects are trying to fill up the empty maps with all kinds of information: listings, photos, tracks, memories, real time position, hyperlocal info, etc. Maps need useful information to become a mainstream tool. However the Geoweb has to overcome big challenges. Search algorithms for maps don't provide good enough results, maps UIs are too complicated to use and too little valuable geolocated data is available. The Geoweb is still small and young, but has a brilliant future. In this session Eduardo Manchón will speak about the challenges of the Geoweb and will share his experience at Panoramio.com, the project that he co-founded. Panoramio's community geolocates millions of photos that enrich the experience of browsing a map.
