Bridging social media and social responsibility

Self-proposed Session by Mike Davis - SHIFT 2008

I would like to propose a session (or speaking opportunity, depending on what format you would like) regarding the pervasiveness of social media within the context of web 2.0. The effects of so many groups of people gathering together are incredible. Geography no longer limits collaboration. Language barriers no longer limit collaboration either. Now, in these times, we have the opportunity to affect the global landscape of social responsibility. I propose a discussion or topic to explore the modern day challenges of connectivity. I can appreciate the revenue possibilities of businesses in this space, but what about those who exist in our real-world communities. What is our responsibility to our communities? What can companies, especially start-up do RIGHT NOW to help their physical communities? While there is a cost associated with helping your community, what are the benefits? I can bring examples of how I work with my clients (from Microsoft - www.microsoft.com - to Empressr – www.empressr.com ) to help them bridge social media and social responsibility. As way of background, I am a product evangelist for technology companies. I evangelize not only about the product, but also about the people who make the product possible. The main focus that my clients have in common is their great sense of social responsibility. I maintain a blog at www.globalcitizenexperiment.com where I discuss these topics in a frank and actionable way. Thank you for the opportunity to submit this idea. I look forward to having an engaging dialogue about the human side of social media. Warmest Regards, Mike Davis
