Home Made Ubiquitous Computing

Demo by Mark Wubben - SHIFT 2008

*Exploring ubiquitous computing through everyday tools* The great thing about the developments in physical, or ubiquitous, or everyware computing is that it's gotten cheap. That means that ordinary people like you and me can play with these technologies, learn from them, and shape them. If anything, in order to understand the problems with physical computing, as well as their possibilities, we *must* play with these new technologies. The purpose of *Home Made Ubiquitous Computing*, then, is to use everyday tools – at least everyday tools for geeks – to create a Ubiquitous Computing experience at SHiFT. Using laptop computers throughout the conference area, we'll track the Bluetooth devices, such as phones or laptops, of the SHiFTers. This data will be displayed on a map, so you can see which areas are the busiest. Jaiku and Twitter bots will broadcast information about the data, turning the conference rooms into Blogjects [^1]. If you want to, you can give us the ID of your Bluetooth device, so we can show you were you were during SHiFT. We'll make this data public during the conference, such that others can quickly find you. With this project, I hope to show you what can be done with a few laptops and some programming. I also intend to make you feel mildly uncomfortable about being tracked while you attend a great talk. Remember, this is everyday technology, *everybody* could track you!
