Social web and urban design
Self-proposed Session by Pedro Soares Neves - SHIFT 2008
In fact this theme comes from the idea that social web grows and develops it's elf in the base of the user generated content.
As the term coined by Marshall McLuhan and Barrington Nevitt, the "prosumer" it's not new, it's in architecture practice since it exists.
This relation it's even more clear when we focus in the global urban manifestation of surface usage that can be mentioned as street art (graffiti).
This forms of action, of appropriation in the urban visual space, are most of the times a reflection of discontent and revolt against the lack of possibility for rapid and easy going participation in the construction of our environments.
In the social web, the platforms give space for liberty, as in the city the streets give space for freedom.
The design of platforms and the design of streets have something in common, the creation of an environment for free participation.
Of course the proprieties of a wall could not be diminished, the NIMBY "Not In My Back Yard", have some reasons to be, in fact in social web we are more given that in material world.
But if we try to design a street as we design a social web platform?
This is the work of a multidisciplinary team in "Bairro Alto" Lisbon.
With focus in street art/ graffiti, and in a given "platform" an Historic center with lots of life, the conditions are gathered.
-- More details about this initiative will be given, as it develops.
